About Reedwild
A practice built around
the papers people keep.
We began with a simple observation: households hold far more of their history than they realise, and most of it is sitting in boxes, bags, and folders — unsorted, unlabelled, and slowly becoming harder to understand.
Back to HomepageOur Story
Where Reedwild came from.
Reedwild was founded in Ipoh by a small group of people with backgrounds in archival studies, family history research, and administrative coordination. The name comes from the reedbed — a place where things accumulate quietly, over time, without anyone quite noticing until the growth becomes dense and meaningful.
We noticed that many families in Perak — particularly those managing the papers of older relatives, or preparing for generational transitions — had no one to turn to for the purely practical, non-legal side of this work. Solicitors handle wills. Financial planners handle accounts. But nobody was helping with the folders of receipts, the stacks of photographs, or the letters in Jawi script that no one had time to read.
So we built a practice around that gap. Our work is administrative and archival. We sort, label, scan, transcribe, and compile. We sit with families and listen to the stories attached to objects and papers. We produce finished, physical outputs that households can keep. That is the entirety of what we do — and we do it carefully.
Our Mission
What we are here to do.
Bring order to accumulated paper
Most households have decades of documents that were never meant to be kept but never got discarded either. We bring a system to that accumulation — one that is practical, comprehensible, and maintainable.
Preserve what deserves to last
Some materials — letters, photographs, handwritten records — hold family meaning that cannot be reconstructed once lost. We identify, scan, and archive these materials so they remain accessible across generations.
Create space for family reflection
Our Conversation Series gives families a structured, comfortable setting to talk through their history. The result is a written record that would otherwise never exist — not because the stories weren't there, but because no one sat down to capture them.
The People
Who comes to your home.
Suraya Lim
Founder & Lead Archivist
Suraya spent twelve years in records management before establishing Reedwild. She leads the Heritage Slow Programme engagements and oversees all printed volume production.
Ravi Nair
Documentation Host
Ravi leads the Reflective Heritage Conversation Series and the Estate Receipt engagements. He is a trained oral historian with particular experience working with Perak's multi-generational households.
Faridah Zainudin
Archival Coordinator
Faridah manages scanning, transcription, and the production of written summaries across all engagements. She reads and transcribes in English, Malay, and Jawi where materials require it.
How We Work
The standards we hold to.
All work done in your home
Materials are sorted, scanned, and organised on-site. Nothing leaves the household without the family's knowledge and explicit agreement.
Personal data handled with care
Any digital materials produced during an engagement are handed over to the household. Reedwild does not retain copies of documents or personal information beyond what is needed for the engagement itself.
Written scope before each engagement
Before work begins, each household receives a written description of what the engagement covers, what it does not cover, and what the fee includes. There are no unexpected additions.
You set the pace
We do not arrive with a fixed schedule that must be met. If a household needs to pause, change a date, or slow down, we accommodate that without penalty or pressure.
Multilingual household comfort
Visits can proceed in English, Bahasa Malaysia, or a natural blend of both. For households with materials in other languages, we note and label clearly without misrepresenting content we cannot read.
No advisory or licensed services
Our work is administrative and archival. We do not provide legal, financial, or estate-planning guidance, and we are clear about this from the first conversation. We refer families to appropriate professionals when needed.
Our Practice
Documentation work for Malaysian families.
Perak has a deep and layered history, and many families in Ipoh and the surrounding towns carry that history in their homes — in the form of faded receipts, letters in multiple scripts, property records from different eras, and photographs that predate digital documentation by decades. This material is not easy to manage, and it is not always obvious who can help.
Reedwild was built to address that need. Our engagements are designed for households that want to bring some order to their accumulated papers and records without involving parties whose roles carry legal or financial weight. We are not a law firm. We are not financial advisors. We are a documentation practice, and that distinction matters to us.
Our three service engagements — the Paper Tidy, the Conversation Series, and the Slow Programme — represent different levels of involvement suited to different household situations. A family managing a straightforward set of administrative receipts has different needs from one with five decades of business correspondence and handwritten family letters. We assess, recommend, and then proceed only with clear agreement from everyone involved.
The households we work with span different backgrounds and family configurations. Some are managing the transition of an older parent's home. Others want to document the story of a family business. Others simply want their papers in order and a written guide so they can maintain that order themselves. All of these are reasonable, valuable goals, and all of them are things we can help with.
We are based at 92 Jalan Sultan Idris Shah in Ipoh and serve households across Perak. For families further afield, we are glad to discuss what might be possible.
